The New York Times writer (and crossword puzzle designer!) on the secret to never smelling, restricting her diet to calm her rosacea, and the psychological benefit of freshly laundered towels.


Nécessaire: What do you love to do?

Molly: Surf, play ping-pong, write, cook, and read, in that order.

What do you do for a living?

I write for places like the New York Times and do branding for companies like Converse and Warby Parker.

How do you practice self-care on a daily basis?

Make time to read—at least an hour. Drink lots of tea. Keep my bathroom scrupulously clean and my towels freshly laundered so every shower feels like a treat.

Describe how you take care of your body.

Lots of time outside, lots of food, dry-brushing, laughing, and of course SEX!

What is your dream "me time" scenario?

Coffee at first light, surfing at dawn, chill with some dolphins, collect shells and rocks on the shore, eat banana pancakes with a rude amount of butter, fall asleep reading a book, wake up from nap with mysteriously restored energy, glug margaritas—plural.

What is your real "me time" scenario?

Coffee at first light, surf Rockaway, chill with some floating trash in the water, get cold, hit the Dunkin’ drive-thru for another gallon of coffee, get stuck in traffic, remember that my car has seat-warmers, melt into the warm embrace of car upholstery, take a warm shower using all my bath products with wild abandon, make myself a greasy hamburger or kimchi pancake and pass out at 9pm.


What is the best life hack you've discovered?

I’ve never used deodorant. My grandfather was a bacteriologist and taught everyone to swab their underarms with a little rubbing alcohol after each shower to kill off bacteria. I keep a travel spray bottle of it in my medicine cabinet. My underarms have literally never smelled.

What is your biggest weekly indulgence?

Buying the Friday New York Times crossword puzzle and going out for cocktails with my husband so we can get toasted and solve clues together.

What is your biggest weekly sacrifice?

Avoiding spicy foods because they ignite my rosacea. I loathe my rosacea.

What does 'balance' look like for you? How do you find balance?

A mixture of mindless physical activity and concentrated mental focus in a 40/60 proportion.
